Langtang and Helambu

Annapurna | Everest | Manaslu | Climbing | Biking | Rafting | Safari

These two regions lie close to Kathmandu and we have grouped them together as some of the treks cross both. The Helambu trek is very easily accessed and can be reached from Kathmandu by taxi.

Helambu Trek

Day 1 Kathmandu - Chisopani (2300m)
A short ride to Sundarijal, followed by a walk up the ridge to the village.

Day 2 Chisopani - Khutumsang (2470m)
Dawn reveals a wonderful panorama of the Himalayas from Annapurna to Everest. A switchback day follows with a drop to 1770m with several ridges, the highest of which is 2620m before the village.

Day 3 Khutumsang - Tharepati (3490m)
The trail continues up through rhododendron forest to a height of 3285m then levels off in meadow country before going up again to Tharepati.

Day 4 Tharepati - Tarke Gyang (2600m)
A steep descent through Malemchigaon village to the Malemchi river at 1890m, followed by an ascent to the picturesque village of Tarke Gyang.

Day 5 Tarke Gyang - Kiul (1280m)
The trail continues to descend through the villages of Kakani and Thimbu into the rice-growing country around the Malemchi river. The people of this area belong to the lowland ethnic groups of Brahmin, Chhetri and Newar.

Day 6 Kiul to Pati Bhanjyang (1770m)
More descent to Talamarang on the river at 940m before ascending once more over the ridge to Pati Bhanjyang which is not far from Chisopani.

Day 7 Pati Bhanjyang - Kathmandu
Back down the ridge through Chisopani to Sundarijal for the transport back to the city.

Helambu-Langtang Trek

Days 1 to 3 Kathmandu - Tharepati (3490m)
As Helambu Trek above.

Day 4 Tharepati - Gosainkund (4380m)
The hardest day of the trek with an ascent to the Laurebina Pass (4610m) before dropping to the holy lake of Gosainkund.

Day 5 Gosainkund - Sing Gompa (3250m)
Two more lakes, Bhairav Kund and Saraswati Kund are passed in the first few km down the ridge, then a steeper ridge is followed down to the tea shops at Laurebina Yak. Here we can obtain more spectacular views of the Himalayan panorama (as well as a cup of tea!) Then it is on down again to Chandan Bari, the site of Sing Gompa.

Day 6 Sing Gompa - Dhunche (1950m)
The descent is completed with the final day being spent in rhododendron and fir forests again before arrival in the “frontier town” of Dhunche, the head of the road down to Trisuli and Kathmandu.

Day 7 Dhunche - Kathmandu
A long ride back to the city but not without interest on the way.

Langtang Valley Trek

Day 1 Kathmandu - Dhunche (1950m)
A four hour ride, first on paved road then on unpaved, into the Langtang National Park. Good views of Manaslu and Ganesh Himal are obtained on the way.

Day 2 Dhunche - Syabru (2100m)
The route follows the road for a while then turns off onto a track at the village of Thulo Bharku. Climbing through rhododendron forest the trail crosses a ridge at 2300m where it enters the Langtang valley and descends to the village.

Day 3 Syabru - Changtang (2380m)
The trail descends to the river at 1550m before climbing again through bamboo forest where a large variety of wildlife may be seen up to a height of 2350m. A short descent leads to the settlement.

Day 4 Changtang - Langtang village (3500m)
Today is a day of steady climbing high above the river. Higher up, the valley becomes wider and flatter, and the trail passes through yak pastures to the village which is the headquarters of the National Park.

Day 5 Langtang village - Kyanjin Gompa (3800m)
A short day climbing through the yak pastures to the settlement. There is a cheese factory here and the short day gives an opportunity to explore the local area.

Day 6 Kyanjin Gompa (3800m)
The day is spent climbing one or two peaks, Kyanjin Ri (4773m) and Tsergo Ri (4984m) which give excellent views of the surrounding peaks.

Days 7 to 9 Kyanjin Gompa - Dhunche (1950m)
We follow the outward route back to the roadhead. The shorter time is possible because most of the route is downhill. For those with more time available it is possible to camp higher up the valley for one or two days with further ascents possible.

Day 10 Dhunche - Kathmandu
