Kazakhstan/Kyrgyzstan is an exciting new venue for us. Flights with Air Astana will take us direct to Almaty in the southeast of the country which was the capital of Kazakhstan until 1988 when the capital was moved to Astana. From Almaty we have a 200km drive to the Karkara base camp (2200m) which is located over the border in Kyrgyzstan. From the base camp it is possible to do short treks, mountain bike rides and horse riding. Our local agency is run by Dr Kazbek Valiyev, the first Kazak climber to climb Mount Everest and president of the Kazakhstan Mountaineering Foundation. The agency maintains three high camps at 4000m in the mountains from which it is possible to do more extensive trekking. The treks may be combined with ascents of peaks between 5000m and 5500m which are of a similar standard to the trekking peaks of Nepal. For experienced climbers the peaks of Kan Tengri (7010m) and Pobeda (7439m) offer a great challenge, each taking several days to climb. Karkara base camp is equipped with a well-appointed mess hall with bar, frame tents (2-person), outdoor tables and chairs, sauna and shower facilities and mountain rescue facilities. The high camps have mess tents, frame tents with tables and chairs, saunas and long-range radio. Please contact us for further details.
